The official currency in Hungary is the forint. Foreign currency may only be exchanged at officially recognised places, and official receipt of exchange must be kept until leaving the country. If you exchange money on the black market, you alone bear the responsibility and the risk of being cheated. The National Bank of Hungary / Budapest V. Szabadság tér 8. / is open Mon.-Fri. 10.30-14.00. Commercial banks are usually open Mon.-Fri. 08.00-15.00. All banks are closed on Saturdays. Numerous money change offices are open at the weekends in the Inner Town of Budapest. Currency can be exchanged at travel offices as well. Out of business opening hours, you can also use automatic cash machines / ATMs / located throughout the city. Most currency exchange bureaux will cash foreign currency denominated travellers cheques, Eurocheques and banks cheques at the Hungarian National Bank's listed rate.
