Description: Pécs is the country's fourth-largest town. The town was founded by the Romans at the beginning of the second century and it was called Sopianae.Nowdays this name is a hungarian cigarette brand. The 4th century 'necropolis' consisting of 16 graves was acknowledged by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2000.The first fort to defend the city was probably built in the first decades of the 11th century,using the stones of once famous ancient Roman town,Sopianae.A huge cathedral with four towers was built to replace the first church and bishop's palace grew ever larger and more ornate during the Middle Age.The southern and eastern ramparts were demolished to make way for promenades.The remaining walls,to the north,the west and some other parts,are still standing,and have been restored.The architectural monuments of the 143 years/1543-1686/ Turkish occupation,the mosques,the Turkish bath and Pasha Idris's tomb,can still be seen.Another evident of the historical struggle is the Inner City Parish Church.The famous painter Victor Vasarely was born in Pécs and a museum dedicated to him that well worth visiting..A few meters further is the Zsolnay Ceramic Factory,and the building houses some fabolous Zsolnay pieces.
Mecseknádasd is a little village in Baranya County, but this is the place where Saint Margaret of Scotland was born in 1045 at the Castle Reka.She was born in Hungary while her family was in exile because of the Danish invasion of England. |
